Understanding Colour Gamut

Updated: Sep 6, 2022

Colour Gamut:

The term colour gamut refers to the range of colours a device can produce. Colour Gamut is a certain complete subset of a colour space.

Every photo or video related devices have it's own colour range and this range is the colour gamut of that device.

If the gamut of a device is larger or wider then the device give you more rich saturated colours available.

Colour gamut depends on colour spaces. If that device can show you almost every colours of sRGB colour space but can't show richer colours of Adobe RGB colour space's then the device has sRGB supported colour gamut.

As colour gamuts become smaller it is the rich saturated colours, suffer first. This phenomenon is known as Clipping. That's why when we put a Adobe RGB image in to our only sRGB supported mobile phone some time colours are changed. Or when we convert an Adobe RGB image into a CMYK the richer colour available in Adobe RGB no longer being available in CMYK. For that when we edit an image and make a print, printed one looks different than the display monitor. It is for the Clipping.

If you working with a photo with Adobe RGB colour space it is not necessary that you have to buy a monitor with Adobe RGB supported Colour Gamut. It depends on how accurate colour do you want. Even if you buy a Adobe RGB monitor you may not be get perfect colours. You need to calibrate your monitor properly to get perfet colours. Bit depth also play a big role.

Digital Cameras also have colour Gamut. Most of them have sRGB and Adobe RGB colour space option to choose. Different branded camera gives you different colour gamut in same colour space. You can see the difference by capturing same image with two different branded cameras. But if RAW is selected then it give you the maximum capability of what the camera can record.

Almost 99% devices have sRGB colour space supported colour gamut.

There is an example of a device's colour gamut with its co-responding colour spaces.
